ABOUT IMPULSE

Since 2000, the aTrek Dance Collective has presented the IMPULSE Dance festival, bringing high quality, advanced-level educators to provide in-depth modern dance training to St. Louis. Past IMPULSE artist-educators have worked with the some of the country’s most prestigious companies and choreographers including: Paul Taylor, Stephen Petronio, New York City Ballet, David Parsons, Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Momix, Alvin Ailey, Meredith Monk, Murray Louis & Alwin Nikolais.

IMPULSE is designed for college-aged students, professional dancers, and advanced level high school dancers. It is intended to challenge the dancer's approach to movement while deepening their existing skills. The IMPULSE curriculum is specifically designed to take dancers beyond the realm of the technical and support breakthroughs in their abilities as performers and artists.

IMPULSE is structured to maximize opportunities for student participation. There are daytime, evening and weekend classes and workshops available at intermediate and advanced levels. Classes are structured to allow both in-depth training in a few areas and a general introduction to various techniques and approaches to contemporary dance for further study.

So whether you can commit yourself for the entire two weeks or just one evening, IMPULSE has something to offer every dancer. To register click here or call 314-772-7778.

Scholarships & Work Study

Full and partial scholarships and work study are available based on talent, financial need and availability.

Please send us a COMPLETED Scholarship Application and support materials. Scholarships will be awarded to qualified applicants on first come first serve basis. Although you may send any materials that you feel represent you accurately, we recommend the following:

• 5-10 minute video displaying your dancing: center work, phrases, across the floor, choreography, performances, etc. (esp. important if we do not know you. Alternatively, you could come to a class taught by one of the collective's members. Contact us for more information about this option.)

• Description of what is on the tape and what you are wearing, if there are others in the video

• Brief letter of recommendation or a reference that we may contact (this is more important for work-study applicants to verify your experience and skills)

Professional Rates

Professional rates are also available. Another way to reduce tuition is to host an out of town guest (student or faculty).
Drop us an email
if you are interested in either of these options.

STUDENT FEEDBACK ABOUT IMPULSE

"It was such a gift to myself to take two week to just be a dancer and connect deeply with that aspect of myself. It really got my dance carreer moving."

"The most important idea I took away from this class was the idea that the dance, the dancer, and the dancing are not separate entities - that I am the dance. That was a revelation for me."

"This intensive was an awakening experience for me and brought me into a closer relationship with myself.  The environment allowed me to free myself from judgement and just feel the pure joy of moving.  My confidence in improvisation increased dramatically, along with my passion for dance."

"Classes were always insightful; classes pertaining to the senses (vision, touch) were valuable to me as a dancer..."

"David's (Marchant) ideas and theories were fascinating and his method of teaching felt very comfortable and non-judgemental."

"I became a lot more comfortable with improvisation, I began to think more in-depth about purpose of movement and about trusting myself and my abilities."

"It was one of the best times I've ever had at a workshop."

"(the workshop) changed the way I think about dance."

"I loved it."
